Embark on one of Bhutan’s most spectacular overland journeys as you travel from Paro in the west to Trashigang in the far east. This cross-country drive spans a diverse tapestry of landscapes—from alpine valleys and historic towns to high mountain passes and subtropical forests.

The route begins in Paro, Bhutan’s only international gateway, and leads through Thimphu, the bustling capital. From there, the road ascends to Dochula Pass (3,100m), where—on a clear day—you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Himalayan range. As you continue eastward, the terrain transforms with every turn, passing through fertile valleys, winding mountain roads, and charming villages that preserve Bhutan’s timeless culture.

Covering approximately 600 kilometers, the journey typically takes 12 to 14 hours, though it’s best experienced over two or more days to allow time for sightseeing and rest. With frequent ascents and descents, and ever-changing weather conditions, the drive can be challenging but deeply rewarding. Regular stops to enjoy local hospitality, visit monasteries, or simply admire the scenery are highly recommended.

Before setting out, check road conditions and weather updates, especially during monsoon or winter months. This journey across Bhutan is not just a drive—it’s an immersive experience into the heart and soul of the kingdom.

Your journey begins with a scenic drive to Chaling, winding through the charming Radhi village—renowned for its handwoven textiles and vibrant rice terraces. At Chaling, you’ll meet your trekking team and pack animals, signaling the start of your adventure into Bhutan’s eastern highlands.

The trail climbs steadily through lush meadows where yaks and sheep graze freely, and traditional yak herders' huts dot the hillsides. As you ascend, the landscape opens up to Shaktimi meadow, a serene alpine pasture surrounded by silence and sweeping views. From here, the path continues upward to Mendula Pass at 3,354 meters.

Crossing the pass, the trail descends gently into dense rhododendron forests, their twisted trunks and moss-covered branches adding a mystical atmosphere to your walk. Eventually, you’ll arrive at Donmang Chu (3,124m), a peaceful riverside campsite nestled in nature’s quiet embrace.

This first day offers a rich blend of highland meadows, floral forests, and cultural glimpses—setting the tone for the immersive days ahead.

Today’s journey offers a pleasant and culturally rich trek as you make your way from Domang Chu to Merak. The trail begins along a well-paved path, winding gently through the valley. As you approach the final stretch, the trail gently climbs toward the charming hamlet of Gangu. From here, it's another 45-minute walk to Merak, a highland village nestled at 3,520 meters.

Before entering the village, your campsite awaits with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the clustered stone houses of Merak below—offering the perfect spot to soak in the dramatic scenery.

In the afternoon, take the time to explore the village, known for its unique semi-nomadic Brokpa community and rich cultural traditions. Engage with the locals, learn about their yak-herding lifestyle, or simply enjoy the quiet rhythm of highland life.

For those preferring a more relaxed option, a vehicle transfer to Merak is available and takes approximately two hours—giving you the flexibility to trek or travel comfortably based on your energy and interest.

Today's trek presents one of the most challenging yet rewarding sections of your journey as you ascend to Nachungla Pass, the highest point on this route at 4,153 meters. Departing from the campsite, the trail begins with a steady, gradual climb—ideal for acclimatization. After an initial ascent, you'll reach a preliminary pass at 3,900 meters, offering a scenic rest stop and a preview of the final leg ahead.

As you continue, the terrain becomes increasingly varied, alternating between lush alpine meadows and rocky, rugged paths. Take measured breaks along the way to stay hydrated and fully appreciate the dramatic landscape around you. Approaching the final stretch to Nachungla, the trail steepens significantly, demanding focus and stamina.

Upon reaching the summit, you’ll be greeted by sweeping panoramic views—a truly awe-inspiring reward for the day’s effort. Take time to soak in the grandeur of the Himalayan landscape, and as always, maintain a steady pace and stay mindful of safety while trekking at high altitude.

The day’s journey begins with a descent to the river, where you’ll cross its cool, rushing waters before continuing along its winding banks. The trail meanders gently, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful rhythm of the flowing river as you gradually make your way uphill.

As the path ascends, you’ll reach a hilltop marked by a small Chorten (stupa), offering panoramic views of the breathtaking Sakteng Valley below. This part of Bhutan is cherished for its raw, untouched wilderness, where dense forests, rare wildlife, and alpine flora thrive in harmony. If luck is on your side, you may even catch a rare glimpse of a red panda nestled among the trees—a treasured encounter in this part of Bhutan.

Following the descent from the ridge, the trail leads you to the outskirts of Sakteng village. Here, at an elevation of 2,950 meters, your camp will be set up for the night. Surrounded by serene Himalayan scenery, it’s a perfect place to rest and prepare for the cultural experiences that await in this remote eastern hamlet.

Today’s journey starts early with a gentle climb to a small hill on the western edge of Sakten village, providing a refreshing vantage point to begin the day. From there, the trail descends gracefully toward the river, weaving through lush broadleaf forests that carpet the landscape in vibrant green.

Your destination is a serene meadow beside the river near Joenkhar Teng village, situated at an elevation of 1,733 meters. This quaint village, perched on a hillside, is home to the Brokpa and Sharchopa communities. Take time to engage with the locals, visit the community school, and explore the outreach clinic, immersing yourself in the unique cultural fabric and daily life of the village. Surrounded by breathtaking nature and enriched by genuine hospitality, this day promises a rewarding and memorable chapter of your journey.

Embarking on the final day of your trek, begin with a brief ascent through Joenkhar Teng. Crossing suspension bridges adds an adventurous element to your journey as you shortly arrive at Phongmay village. Here, your vehicle awaits, marking the conclusion of the trekking portion of your adventure.

Board your vehicle and set off toward Trashigang, taking in the evolving landscapes along the way. A notable stop during the drive is at Rangjung, where you can visit the Rangjung Monastery, founded by the revered His Eminence Garab Rinpoche.

Explore the spiritual and cultural richness of the monastery, admire its intricate architecture, and soak in the tranquil atmosphere. After this enriching visit, continue your drive to Trashigang. This final day offers a harmonious blend of adventure, cultural exploration, and spiritual discovery, bringing your trekking journey to a memorable close.

1. Explore the Isolated Brokpa Culture

  • This trek takes you deep into the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary in eastern Bhutan, where you’ll meet the Brokpa, a semi-nomadic ethnic group known for their distinctive clothing and yak-herding lifestyle.
  • The region was closed to outsiders until 2010, preserving its cultural authenticity.

2. Moderate to Challenging Trek

  • The trek is 5 to 6 days, with long walking days (5–8 hours) and altitudes ranging from 1,500m to 4,100m.
  • It includes crossing the Nakchung La Pass (4,150m) and several river valleys and forests, requiring good stamina.

3. Rich in Biodiversity & Folklore

  • The area is part of the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, home to red pandas, Himalayan bears, and many bird species.
  • Locals believe the Yeti (Migoi) roams this region — Bhutan even designated the sanctuary partly to protect its habitat.

4. No Lodges — Camping Required

  • This is a fully camping-based trek with support crew and horses to carry gear.
  • There are no teahouses, so all accommodation, food, and logistics are provided by your tour operator.
