After an early breakfast, set off on a scenic drive to the base point of Bhutan’s most iconic landmark—Taktsang Monastery, famously known as the Tiger’s Nest. Clinging dramatically to a cliffside nearly 900 meters above the Paro Valley, this sacred site is one of Bhutan’s most revered spiritual destinations.
According to Bhutanese legend, Guru Rinpoche—also known as Padmasambhava—arrived at this cliffside in the 8th century, riding a flying tigress to subdue malevolent spirits. He meditated here for three months, sanctifying the site and giving it the name 'Taktsang,' meaning 'Tiger’s Nest.
The journey begins with a drive of about 1.5 hours to a viewpoint cafeteria, offering a spectacular vista of the monastery framed by pine forests and prayer flags. From here, those who wish to continue can hike another hour uphill to reach the temple complex itself—a rewarding experience both spiritually and scenically.
After exploring the monastery, return to the cafeteria for a well-earned lunch with panoramic views. Then descend on foot to the base, where your vehicle awaits to drive you back to your hotel for a restful evening.

After crossing a mountain stream nestled at the valley floor, the trail climbs steadily through forested slopes, eventually reaching a broad rocky ledge at 3,350 meters. From this natural viewpoint, you'll be rewarded with sweeping vistas of the valley stretching far below—an ideal place to pause, breathe in the crisp alpine air, and absorb the grandeur of the Himalayan landscape.

Hiking along the mountain ridge reveals the untamed beauty of alpine flora. In spring, the trail winds through blooming wildflowers and patches of wild asparagus, creating a vibrant contrast against the rugged landscape. The open grasslands feel both invigorating and serene. As you reach the first pass—marked by a striking stone outcrop—you’re rewarded with sweeping views of Kanchenjunga in Sikkim and the towering Himalayan peaks of Bhutan.
Descending into the Ramatama Valley, the path gradually ascends again, weaving past traditional yak herders’ huts scattered along the way. Eventually, you arrive at the tranquil shores of Utso Lake, known for its abundance of golden trout shimmering beneath the surface. Tonight’s campsite rests just above the lake at an elevation of 4,100 meters, offering a peaceful setting under the Himalayan sky.

The trail skirts the western flank of Dharaso, leading to a saddle at 4,520 meters where you can pause to take in breathtaking Himalayan vistas. From this vantage point, around 4,460 meters in elevation, peaks such as Mount Everest (Nepal), Kanchenjunga (Sikkim), Jumolari, Jitchu Drakey, and Tseringma dominate the skyline.
For an even grander panorama, consider climbing the nearby 4,720-meter peak close to the saddle, which offers sweeping views of Kambum, Masagang, Tsenda Gang, and Ganche Ta.
From the saddle, the path descends past yak herders’ huts toward Dochac. Following the river’s course with gentle rises and falls, the trail eventually ascends to Pangka, where you’ll camp at 4,000 meters.
Optional note: If trekking in spring, note that there is no drinking water available at Pangka camp. To ensure a smoother final day, you may continue hiking about an hour and a half from Pangka to your next campsite, shortening the distance for the following day.

They are scheduled to start early this morning. We have to cross several passes on this day, each more impressive than the last. Look for different species of blue poppies (June-July) and mountain birds. After crossing the last small ridge, we gradually descend towards the main junction pass, which intersects the roads to Chamgan, Tareja, Ganeka, and Gasero. So we make a very short descent to the right and then a horizontal turn for a few minutes towards the Chamgan trail. You will have to climb up and down three to four small ridges before starting the steep descent until you reach Chamgan Village. Eventually, we reach the motorway, and transport to Thimphu is waiting.
