Embarking on the Jumolhari Trek, your journey commences with a 12km drive north of Paro to the historic ruins of Drugyel Dzong (2580m). At this starting point, your trekking crew awaits. Following a brief meeting, the trek begins downhill on a wide trail along the Pachhu (river), gently climbing through well-tended rice terraces and millet fields. The valley expands, revealing apple orchards, traditional farmsteads, and the hamlets of Mitshi Zampa and Sangatan. Passing through a blue pine forest, you reach the army post of Gunitsawa at 2,810m, where trekking permits are checked. Crossing the Pachu River on a wooden bridge, the ascent leads to Sharna Zampa at 2,870m. Nestled in meadows surrounded by trees, this tranquil spot serves as tonight's campsite.

Continuing along the Pachhu (Paro River), the trail unfolds through a picturesque landscape of pine, oak, and spruce forests. After a steady ascent and descent, approximately 2 hours into the hike, you'll arrive at Shingkharap, a stone house situated at 3110m—an essential rest stop for travellers and highland residents. Following the bridge's left side, a hot lunch awaits. A trail junction presents itself, with the left path representing an ancient trade route and the right leading to a wooden bridge (the chosen route). Climbing through rhododendron forests and crossing the bridge once more, you arrive at the campsite nestled at 3750m, surrounded by beautiful meadows, marking the end of the day's trek.

Ascending above the tree line at 3700m, today's trek commences with a climb from the camp to the army camp. Following the river, the path offers stunning views of surrounding peaks. Navigating through a muddy trail, and passing a mani wall, the journey enters yak country. A hot lunch awaits in a yak herder’s camp, providing a glimpse into their lifestyle. Post-lunch, the hike progresses past the yak herder settlements of Soe and Takethang. The final leg traverses a plateau, ascends a stream bed, and leads to Dangochang village before reaching the awe-inspiring campsite of Jangothang at 4,040m. The panoramic views of Mount Jumolhari and Jichu Drake from this point are truly breathtaking.

Embarking on a four-hour acclimatization hike north of the camp, you'll ascend an open and endless slope with no defined trail. The climb reveals stunning views of Mount Jichu Drake (6989m). For the more adventurous, scrambling further up to 4895m offers an incredible perspective, even surpassing Mount Blanc's height, showcasing the breathtaking Mount Jumolhari. Keep an eye out for rare blue sheep, Himalayan rhubarb, griffon vultures, golden eagles, and the remarkable blue poppy. Jangothang base, with its flat grassy land and an old ruined fortress beneath the towering Mount Jumolhari and Jichu Drake, sets the stage for a remarkable experience. An alternative is a two-hour excursion to the twin Tshophu Lakes en route to Bongtela Pass. Given the altitude, many experience signs of mountain sickness, making it a recommended halt. Whether exploring or relaxing in camp, the day promises to be unforgettable.

Overnight at Simple Lodges. [B/L/D]

The trail commences by following the stream for half an hour, crossing the bridge to the right side. Embarking on a climb to the first ridge, trekkers are rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of Jumolhari (7314m), Jichu Drake (6989m), and Tsherim Gang (6789m). Walking towards the valley, the terrain levels for a while before ascending to the Ngye La pass at 4,830m. Post-pass, a gradual descent unfolds, providing a panoramic view of surrounding peaks and Lingshi Dzong. Time permitting, a detour to this ancient fortress atop a hill overlooking Lingzhi village is a historical treat. Lingzhi Dzong, a haven for pilgrims and a defence fort against invaders, holds centuries of cultural significance. Camp awaits at an altitude of 4010m.

Overnight at Simple Lodges. [B/L/D]

The Laya-Gasa route diverges from the Jumolhari trek as the trail ascends towards a small white Chorten on a ridge above the camp. Turning south, it follows the deep Mo Chhu valley, staying on the west side of the treeless landscape. Climbing steadily above Mo Chhu, the trail then crosses the river and ascends steeply for two hours to reach the Yeli La pass at 4942m. From this pass, on clear days, breathtaking views of Jumolhari, Gangchen Ta, Tsherim Gang, and Masang Gang unfold. Descending alongside a stream to a shelter, and then further downstream, the journey leads to the camp at Shodu (4100m), a picturesque meadow adorned with a Chorten.

Overnight at Simple Lodges. [B/L/D]

Reaching this point marks a return to the tree line. The path aligns with the Thimphu River, descending through enchanting rhododendron, juniper, and alpine forests. The journey treats trekkers to stunning views of cliff-facing rocks and cascading waterfalls. A hot lunch by the riverside offers a delightful pause. Post-lunch, the trail gradually ascends to the ruins of Barshong Dzong, historically a crucial supply point for Lingzhi Dzong. The campsite at Barshong sits at an altitude of 3600m, providing a tranquil setting surrounded by nature and the echoes of historical significance.

Overnight at Simple Lodges. [B/L/D]

Following breakfast at the camp, the hike commences with a gradual ascent until reaching the farm road. Traversing the farm road, a detour leads through a gentle descent into a dense forest of rhododendrons, birch, and conifers. The path steeply drops to meet the Thimphu Chhu River. Staying on the left side of the river, the trail climbs over ridges and descends to side streams. It navigates steep sections in and out to the river, following it southward to Dodena at an elevation of 2600m. At Dodena, you'll be picked up by Bhutan Travelers Transport for a drive back to Thimphu, concluding this picturesque trekking journey.
