Next, enjoy a scenic drive of approximately 54 kilometers, lasting about an hour, to Bhutan’s vibrant capital city, Thimphu. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and take some time to relax and refresh.
In the afternoon, embark on a cultural tour of Thimphu featuring two significant landmarks:
- Memorial Chorten:
Built in 1974 by His Majesty the Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, the Memorial Chorten honors his vision and dedication to Bhutan’s development. It stands as a symbol of peace and spiritual harmony, reflecting the profound respect Bhutan holds for this transformative leader. - Tashi Chhodzong:
Often called the “fortress of the glorious religion,” Tashi Chhodzong dates back to 1641 and was carefully restored during the 1960s. It functions as an important administrative and religious center, housing key government offices and the central monastic body. Access is generally granted during the annual Thimphu Tsechu festival or when the monks move to Punakha Dzong in the winter months.
This first day sets a wonderful tone for your adventure, blending Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage with its stunning Himalayan backdrop.

Begin your day with an unforgettable trek to Taktsang Monastery, famously known as the Tiger’s Nest. Perched on a sheer cliff face over 900 meters above the Paro Valley floor, this sacred site holds deep significance in Bhutanese Buddhism. Legend tells of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) arriving here astride a tigress to meditate and banish malevolent spirits, establishing the foundations of Vajrayana Buddhism in Bhutan.
The hike is invigorating and can take 3–4 hours round‑trip, so be sure you’re prepared with sturdy footwear, layered clothing, and ample water. Along the trail, you’ll traverse fragrant pine forests, cross wooden bridges, and pause at scenic viewpoints that frame the monastery against the rugged Himalayan backdrop.
In 1998, a fire severely damaged the main temple complex, but meticulous restoration has returned Taktsang to its former splendor. As you explore its serene courtyards and prayer halls, you’ll sense both the site’s spiritual power and the pride of the Bhutanese who restored it.
This morning’s journey blends physical challenge, breathtaking scenery, and profound cultural insight—making it one of the most rewarding experiences in Bhutan.
